Our Exemplary Staff
Like any successful team, the Saint Barnabas Radiation Oncology
Team of professionals has excellent training and is comprised
of individuals committed to the same goals and ideals. Below
is a brief description of the role of each team member and
how they will be an integral part of your health care team.
All of these individuals are certified and/or licensed professionals.
- Radiation oncologist: Your radiation oncologist
will oversee your care by developing and prescribing your
treatment plan. He or she will make sure your treatment
is accurately given, monitor your progress, and help identify
and treat any side effects of your radiation therapy. Look
in the back pocket of this brochure or ask the department
secretary for a copy of the credentials of our medical
staff.
- Medical radiation physicist: A qualified radiation
physicist will work directly with your doctor to ensure
that your treatment has been properly tailored to best
suit your medical treatment plan. He or she will oversee
the work done by the dosimetrist and will make sure the
equipment works properly.
- Radiation therapist: You will have close contact
with the radiation therapist who administers your daily
radiation treatment. Under the supervision of your doctor,
he or she will maintain your daily records and regularly
verify that the equipment is working properly.
- Dosimetrist: Many radiation therapists receive
advanced training in order to become dosimetrists. The
dosimetrist works closely with your physician and medical
radiation physicist to calculate your dose of radiation
and help to develop complex treatment plans.
- Radiation oncology nurse: Nurses play a key role
in the education and evaluation of patients undergoing
radiation oncology. Your nurse will assess your condition
prior to, during, and following your radiation oncology
treatments and will provide information on potential side
effects.
- Social worker: Counseling is available to all
patients and their families as needed. Please see Patient
Education and Emotional Support.
- Dietitian: Nutritional counseling is available
to patients as needed. For further information, please
ask your radiation oncology nurse.
